What is Stevia?
Stevia Rebaudiana is a herb that grows naturally in Paraguay and Brazil. What makes this herb so special is that the leaves are very sweet. The Guarani Indians have used it for 1500 years to sweeten their herbal teas and food.
Stevia is known today as a healthy substitute for sugar. The stevia leaf owes its sweet taste to the glycosides. The raw leaves of the stevia plant are about 40 times sweeter than sugar. In practice, this means that only a small amount is needed to sweeten a dish. Stevia has been used as a sweetener in the East for a long time. It has been an officially registered sweetener in Japan since 1970.
Is Stevia Safe?
Stevia is a completely natural and herbal product that has been used for centuries. It has been thoroughly tested in dozens of trials worldwide and has been found to be completely non-toxic. It is also safe to consume.
Beware though: many manufacturers of artificial sweeteners like aspartame abuse the good effects of stevia. For example, Stevia is written in large letters on the packaging. However, when you look at the ingredients you will see that there is very little stevia in it.
Tip: don't be misled and always look at the amount in a product. Good quality stevia can be found in health food stores or health food stores and of course at SuperfoodShop. The color of stevia should be green. Therefore, it is better not to buy the processed form of stevia, which is often white in color.
